Helligkeit, Lumen & Lux

Ever since LED bulbs became available, the wattage has had little to do with brightness—what matters is the value in lumens (the amount of light emitted). The brightness at the dining table is measured in lux: 150–200 lux is sufficient for a cozy meal, and 500 lux or more makes it comfortable for reading or doing homework. A dimmable light fixture covers both needs.

Key Points at a Glance:

  • Today, brightness is measured in lumens (lm), not in watts.
  • A 60-watt incandescent light bulb ≈ 800 lumens.
  • Lumen = light emitted; lux = light that reaches the table.
  • Dining table: 150–200 lux for a cozy atmosphere; 500 lux or more for working.
  • The beam angle and distance also affect the brightness.

This guide explains lighting. The overview “Which Light Fixture for the Dining Table ?” explains which type of light fixture, length, and material are best suited for your dining table.

Why Wattage No Longer Indicates Brightness

In the past, a light bulb’s brightness depended on its wattage—that is, its power consumption. LEDs require significantly fewer watts to produce the same brightness, and their efficiency continues to improve. That is why wattage is no longer a reliable measure of brightness.

What does "lumen" mean?

Lumen (lm) describes the luminous flux—that is, the total amount of light emitted by a light source. The higher the lumen value, the brighter the light source. As a rough guide: A traditional 60-watt incandescent bulb is equivalent to about 800 lumens.

A Comparison of Lumens, Watts, and Light Bulbs

Old Light Bulb Equivalent to approx. (LED)
25 W ~250 lm
40 W ~470 lm
60 W ~800 lm
75 W ~1,055 lm
100 W ~1,500 lm

Approximate guidelines—may vary slightly depending on the light source and manufacturer.

Lumen or lux—what's the difference?

Lumen indicates how much light a fixture emits. Lux measures how much of that light reaches a surface —such as a dining table. The lux level on the table depends on three factors: the lumen output, the beam angle, and the distance between the light fixture and the tabletop. Here’s an example to give you a rough idea: An LED strip with about 1,000 lumens per meter and a 120° beam angle, suspended about 70 cm above the table, produces approximately 250 lux at the center of the table—the exact value varies depending on the table’s color and reflectivity.

How many lux do you need above the dining table?

Use at the Dining Table Recommended Brightness
A Cozy Meal 150–200 lux
General Use 200–300 lux
Reading, homework, assignments 500 lux or more

With our dimmable pendant lights, you can achieve the 500 lux needed for working and conveniently dim the light to 150–200 lux for a cozy evening.

Why the Beam Angle Affects Brightness

Old incandescent bulbs emitted light in all directions, while LEDs emit light only within a limited angle —which is therefore always specified (e.g., 120°). As a result, two light sources with the same lumen rating can appear to have different brightness levels: 900 lm at 30° appears brighter than 900 lm at 120° because the light is more concentrated. So when shopping, pay attention not only to lumens but also to the beam angle. And because LED light is so directional, achieving uniform brightness throughout the entire room requires a well-thought-out combination of general, task, and accent lighting—you can read about how to combine these in our guide “Lighting Concepts for the Living Room and Dining Room.”

Why double the brightness doesn't seem twice as bright

Our eyes do not see the light source itself, but rather the light reflected off the table. If you double the lumens, the reflection does not increase by the same amount —we only partially perceive the increase in brightness. Sufficient brightness remains important, however, for clearly seeing food and objects—and as we age, our eyes need more light, for example, for reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between lumens and watts?

Watts indicate power consumption, while lumens indicate brightness. Since the advent of LED bulbs, the wattage has become a poor indicator of brightness—the lumen value is what matters most.

How many lumens does a 60- or 75-watt incandescent light bulb produce?

A 60-watt incandescent bulb is equivalent to approximately 800 lumens, and a 75-watt incandescent bulb is equivalent to approximately 1,055 lumens.

What is the difference between lumens and lux?

A lumen is the amount of light emitted by a light fixture. A lux is the amount of light that strikes a surface, such as a dining table—depending on the lumens, beam angle, and distance.

How many lux do you need above the dining table?

For a cozy meal, 150–200 lux is sufficient. For reading or doing homework, at least 500 lux is recommended. A dimmable light fixture works well for both situations.

Why do two LEDs with the same lumen output appear to have different brightness levels?

Regarding the beam angle: Narrow-beam light (e.g., 30°) appears brighter than wide-beam light (e.g., 120°), even though the lumen output is the same.
